Committee of Free Acritic and Semi-Occupied Municipalities
The Committee of “Border and Semi-Occupied Municipalities” was established, consisting of the Municipalities of Nicosia, Athienou, Latsia, South Nicosia and Paralimni.
The aim of the Committee is to highlight and promote the enormous problems faced by the border and semi-occupied Municipalities, which arise from the existence of the barbed wire, the presence of the occupying army, and the United Nations, which are directly responsible for the management of the Buffer Zone, which belongs to the Republic of Cyprus.
The Mayor of Athienou, Mr. Kyriakos Kareklas, has been unanimously elected as Chairman of the Committee by the Mayors of the Βορδερ and Semi-Occupied Municipalities.
The objectives and the action plan of the Committee are:
The Committee to constitute an organized group, through which claims will be submitted collectively to the State. Its establishment constitutes a joint effort to address the chronic problems that each Municipality faces, it will emphasize the particular problems that the border Municipalities face and to be recognized as Semi-Occupied Municipalities.
The committee will promote public awareness of the problems that stem from the existence of separation, the passing points and the presence of the occupying army and the awareness and securing the support of institutions and organized groups for even greater advocacy and state support.
To achieve the goals, meetings are requested with the President of the Republic, the Ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs and Defense, the Leaders of the parties, the executive committees of the Union of Municipalities and Communities, and close contact and cooperation with the United Nations and all involved bodies are sought, with main requests:
- The creation of a specific action plan for the revitalization of the area located or adjacent to the confrontation line.
- A specific action plan to attract investors, local and foreign, to the confrontation line.
- Close cooperation and contact with the United Nations and all involved bodies.
