Indoor Sports Hall
The Indoor Sports Hall started operating in November 1993 and since then it is one of the main sport infrastructures of the community.
The sports hall was built in an area that was expropriated next to the primary schools and the old high school, to serve the needs of the schools, at the expense of the Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA) and the Municipality of Athienou. The hall operates and is maintained through municipal funds.
The Municipality hires an operator responsible for providing services of maintaining the hall, taking up duties and responsibilities provided in the relevant contract between the two parties.
The sports hall is used during the school year, from primary schools for indoor sport activities. In the afternoon, general fitness training programs are offered for students as well as separate programs for men and women. It is also used from the ‘YOUTH UNION of ATHIENOU ” (ENA) primarily engaging in women’s and boys handball and indoor soccer (futsal).
During weekends, it hosts professional championship games of the Cyprus Handball Organization and the Cyprus Football Organization (K.O.P.). The hall also hosts various school and sociocultural events (TELETHON, MAKE A WISH, etc.), which attract many participants.
One of the most successful events held in the sports hall is the annual FUTSAL championship held every June attracting a large number of spectators and participating groups from all over Cyprus.
Improvements of all kinds have dramatically upgraded the hall, totaling € 200.000, and have given further momentum to the sports sector in the municipality. The tasks among others include indoor and outdoor coverage of the walls with water blocking / deadening material, improvement of the dressing rooms and sanitary facilities, installation of seats on the shuttles, additional space for the secretariat and installment of large skylights for the provision of sufficient light during the day.
By decision of the Municipal Council ruling in 2010, the sports hall was renamed Indoor Sports Hall ‘Tasos Papadopoulos’ in memory of the late president of the republic Tasos Papadopoulos.

ENOSIS NEON ATHIENOU – short “ENA”
“ENA” was established on May 5th, 1998. It was an initiative of Mr. Constantinos Mavraganis, a physical education professor, and the mayor mr. Panayiotis Koumis in cooperation with the municipality of Athienou and a progressive group of locals.
ENA’s main goal is to facilitate the growth of the sports sector, the growth and dissemination of literature, social mobilization of young people as well as the development and strengthening of the relationships between the local population.
The aim is to introduce as many activities and programs, for all men and women interested to engage in their free time. The main desire of ENA is to consolidate all the unions/athletic teams functioning in the municipality under the auspices of the municipal authorities, having a worthy representation in various Cypriot championships as well as in the European space.
During an extraordinary electoral sitting held on Wednesday, November 16, 2017 the new Council of ENA was set up. The council will serve for two years (2016-2017) consisting of the following members:

ENA membership is currently around 200 athletes (120 boys, 80 girls) and has a qualified trainer.
ENA has been active in the field of handball although interest has been shown in the field of tennis. In addition, the Union is considering the establishment of a basketball team as well. ENA consists of groups of women, girls, mini girls, mini super girls, and boys.
In the year 1999-2000 ENA achieved remarkable results with the participation of its teams in various championships winning even the first place. In May 2000, ENA took part in the Larnaca flower festival with a chariot bearing the theme “Athienitiko Psomi” ( Athienou Bread) and received the very honorable second place. In the year 2000-2001 ENA enrolled in the football federation of indoor soccer (Futsal) and took part in the games organized. Since then ENA has excelled in many games and competitions with similar groups abroad in pan-european championships achieving significant victories.
The Board of ENA continues its efforts to achieve its goals as the interest and enthusiasm of the whole community grows increasingly.
